We all know the feeling of sitting down to watch a highly anticipated movie that plans to take all of our favorite literary character and try to bring them to life. It can be a horrible feeling to have a movie ruin the experience of the original novel, but it is an amazing feeling when a movie captures the sweeping feelings and complex characters of a beloved book!
In my opinion, The Great Gatsby did the latter! As someone who has re-read the book many times, I heard all of my favorite lines and saw all of my favorite scenes. For the most part, the movie stuck to the book. The parts that deviated from F. Scott Fitzgerald were my least favorite.
For example, the whole frame story of Nick in a sanitorium writing his memories added nothing for me. I also thought that is was really cliche to have some of the best lines literally displayed on the screen as text. Like I said, I was definitely on the lookout for my favorite lines. But I wanted to hear them coming from the mouths of my favorite characters in the moment, not displayed typed on a typewriter and displayed on screen- it took away all the subtlety and beauty whenever they did that! Did anyone else like the text on the screen? Was it just me?
I loved each actor for their character, too. Leonardo DiCaprio has still got it! Carey Mulligan impressed me the most- I was expecting to be very underwhelmed, but in my opinion she truly rose to the occassion and had a fresh take on Daisy Buchanan (much different than Mia Farrow’s Daisy!).
Finally, the music was AMAZING. I absolutely love the soundtrack and have been listening to it on repeat ever since. The soundtrack includes a blend of 20’s instrumentals, Jay-Z, Lana Del Rey, Florence and the Machine, Sia, Fergie, Will.i.Am, and many more of my favorites!
And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for… The Great Gatsby STYLE!
I can’t wait to hear your take on the movie!
